04.116.2012 - SpyBot Detection Updates: 2012-04-25

View Spybot related news. Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you have not intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you do not see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there is no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

04.116.2012 - Microsoft Security Intelligence Report Warns of Ongoing Conficker Threat and Clarifies Reality of Targeted Attacks

View Microsoft-Press related news.

REDMOND, Wash. — April 25, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. today released the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report volume 12 (.pdf file), which found that the Conficker worm was detected approximately 220 million times worldwide in the past two and a half years, making it one of the biggest ongoing threats to enterprises. The study also revealed the worm continues to spread because of weak or stolen passwords and vulnerabilities for which a security update exists.

According to the SIRv12, quarterly detections of the Conficker worm have increased by more than 225 percent since the beginning of 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2011 alone, Conficker was detected on 1.7 million systems worldwide. In examining the reasons behind Conficker’s prevalence in organizations, research showed that 92 percent of Conficker infections were a result of weak or stolen passwords, and 8 percent of infections exploited vulnerabilities for which a security update exists.

“Conficker is one of the biggest security problems we face, yet it is well within our power to defend against,” said Tim Rains, director of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing. “It is critically important that organizations focus on the security fundamentals to help protect against the most common threats.”

The SIRv12 also revealed that many of the threats often referred to as Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are no more advanced or sophisticated than other types of attacks. In most cases, these attacks leverage known vectors such as exploiting weak or stolen passwords and vulnerabilities for which security updates exist, but their success lies in the persistence and determination in trying different tactics to compromise the target. This is why Microsoft refers to these types of threats as Targeted Attacks performed by Determined Adversaries, rather than APTs.

“Labeling cyberthreats as ‘advanced’ is often times misleading and can divert organizations’ attention away from addressing basic security issues, which can prevent more common threats from infiltrating their systems,” Rains said. “Most attacks do not possess new, super-advanced techniques or technology as the APT label implies; in the majority of cases, they simply exploit weak or stolen passwords or vulnerabilities for which a security update exists and employ social engineering.”

Microsoft recommends that customers and businesses adhere to the following security fundamentals to help ensure they are protected:

• Use strong passwords and educate employees on their importance

• Keep systems up to date by regularly applying available updates for all products

• Use antivirus software from a trusted source

• Invest in newer products with a higher quality of software protection

• Consider the cloud as a business resource

“With organizations being presented with significant amounts of data and media reports on cyberthreats, the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report volume 12 gives us good perspective on recent trends in the global threat landscape,” said Bob Rodger, global head of IT Infrastructure Security at HSBC. “The report, in combination with other sources of intelligence, assists us to more accurately and effectively invest, prioritize and make informed decisions about our security infrastructure to ensure that our business continues to be optimally protected from threats.”

For businesses, as Scott Charney, corporate vice president of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing, outlined in his keynote presentation at RSA 2012, Microsoft recommends a more holistic approach to risk management to help protect against both broad-based and targeted attacks, including the following:

• Prevention. Employ security fundamentals and pay close attention to configuration management and timely security update deployment.

• Detection. Carefully monitor and perform advanced analysis to identify threats. Keep abreast of security events and leverage credible sources of security intelligence.

• Containment. If the targeted organization has configured its environment with targeted attacks by determined adversaries in mind, it is possible to contain the attacker’s activities and thereby buy time to detect, respond to and mitigate the attack. To contain an attack, consideration should be given to architecting domain administration models that limit the availability of administrator credentials and apply available technologies, such as IPsec-based network encryption, to restrict unnecessary interconnectivity on the network.

• Recovery. It is important to have a well-conceived recovery plan, supported by suitably skilled incident response capability. Maintain a “crisis committee” to set response priorities and engage in exercises to test the organization’s ability to recover from different attack scenarios.

Microsoft produces the SIR twice per year to keep the industry informed on the changing threat landscape and provide actionable guidance for customers in an effort to create safer more trusted computing experiences for everyone. The latest report, volume 12, provides insight into online threat data with new information for July 2011 through December 2011 and analysis of data from more than 100 countries and regions around the world. 04.116.2012 - Lebanese Ministry of Finance Gets Connected With Microsoft Lync 2010

View Microsoft-Press related news.

BEIRUT — April 25, 2012 — Lebanon’s Ministry of Finance has implemented Microsoft Lync 2010 to satisfy an overwhelming need to better connect its staff of more than 5,000 government employees tasked with promoting a stable economic environment for the East Mediterranean country.

The Ministry’s previous system of intercommunication was effectively limited to phone and email correspondence. Employees on assignment overseas could only interact with their colleagues in Lebanon via email; they had to be physically present to participate in meetings. In addition, the Ministry’s directory had become unwieldy and unworkable.

“Even if you could find [an employee in the directory], you had no idea if they were away, in a meeting or in a middle of a phone call,” said Ahmad Itani, systems manager, Lebanon Ministry of Finance. “This inability to connect and know each other’s availability caused a lot of dissatisfaction among the employees. We were really having difficulty in collaborating with our colleagues, and it was very frustrating for everyone.”

Since deploying Lync 2010, the Ministry has witnessed a dramatic change in the way its staff communicates, with improved collaboration and an increase in productivity. Among the particular areas that were addressed by Microsoft’s unified communications solution was the issue of finding a specific employee. With Lync 2010, Ministry employees can sort and search for one another by name; they can communicate via instant message and add one another to contact lists. Staff members no longer have to be local to participate in meetings, and Lync 2010’s voice conferencing capabilities have also helped cut communications-related costs.

“Employees realized that Lync 2010 had far more capabilities than just instant messaging, and they like the fact that they can keep in touch with everyone, especially if they’re traveling abroad,” Itani said.

One of the collaboration tools that has particularly impressed the Ministry’s staff is co-authoring, which allows a Microsoft Office document to be shared and worked on by different people simultaneously.

“This has proved to be a great timesaver since you can get everybody’s input during meetings even though they may not be in the same room,” Itani said. “This has also made a lot of in-person trips unnecessary and saved us a lot of money.”

“Government entities worldwide are being challenged to do more with less — they need to deliver increasingly intelligent services demanded by citizens, yet also focus on keeping costs down,” said Elie Sleiman, Public Sector account manager, Microsoft Lebanon & NIM. “As the Lebanon Ministry of Finance has seen, new technology can open the door for more efficient and improved decision-making and increased accountability. These combined benefits of collaboration through technology can make a real impact on the overall delivery of better citizen services.”

04.116.2012 - Cambridge Consortium Completes Successful Trial of Next-Generation Wireless

View Microsoft-Press related news.

CAMBRIDGE, England — April 25, 2012 — Following more than 10 months of comprehensive testing in urban and rural areas in and around Cambridge, England, the Cambridge TV White Spaces Consortium, which comprises leading international and U.K. technology and media companies, has successfully demonstrated the potential of television white spaces. The consortium explored and measured a range of applications — rural wireless broadband, urban pop-up coverage and the emerging “machine-to-machine” communication — and found TV white spaces can be successfully utilized to help satisfy the rapidly accelerating demand for wireless connectivity. The consortium members recommend that the U.K. regulator Ofcom complete its development of the enabling regulatory framework in a manner that protects licensees from harmful interference and encourages innovation and deployment.

The consortium includes Adaptrum Inc., Alcatel-Lucent, Arqiva, BBC, BSkyB, BT, Cambridge Consultants, CRFS, CSR plc., Digital TV Group (DTG), Microsoft Corp., Neul, Nokia, Samsung, Spectrum Bridge Inc., The Technology Partnership plc. (TTP) and Virgin Media, and it demonstrated unprecedented partnership and collaboration while working closely with Ofcom to ensure that this technology can now be harnessed through a regulatory framework to benefit consumers and further innovation in the U.K. and beyond.

The consortium issued this statement: “With the rapid rise of mobile broadband and the desire to enable remote areas to enjoy the benefits of broadband, the need for more efficient spectrum use has never been greater. The U.K. is playing a leading role by exploring the use of license-exempt access to TV white spaces and developing a model regulatory framework. None of this would have been possible without the support of Ofcom — and the constructive and unprecedented collaboration of the companies involved — to progress this groundbreaking mode of spectrum access.”

Commenting today on the TV White Spaces trial, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey said, “I welcome the success to date of the Cambridge White Spaces Trial. Leading innovators from the U.K. and beyond have demonstrated the potential that television white spaces can have for meeting the U.K.’s broadband needs. Developments such as this endorse the leadership position that the U.K. can take in enabling more efficient use of spectrum by opening up an array of opportunities for wireless applications for consumers and businesses alike. I find the idea of using white space devices to deliver broadband to rural communities, or to expand the range and quality of urban Wi-Fi hotspots, exciting. This can form a significant contribution to our thinking as we consider how to maximize the value of the spectrum below 1 GHz. I look forward to hearing the next chapter of your progress.”

Trial Implementation and Results

The trial analysis found Cambridge has significant television white spaces capacity — 20 white spaces channels corresponding to 160 megahertz in total, of which 13 (104 megahertz) were allowed in the test license from Ofcom — which can be used to help augment existing broadband networks, extend broadband access to rural areas and allow for machine-to-machine communications. Further, geolocation databases, provided by Microsoft and Spectrum Bridge, proved a reliable way to control frequency use by the white spaces radios and to quickly adapt to changes in spectrum usage by the licensed users.

City center coverage. The consortium set up base stations on the north side of the Cambridge city center in four pubs and a theater, aiming to provide widespread coverage, including “pop-up” Wi-Fi hotspots. The base stations were connected to dual omnidirectional wide-band antennas mounted on rooftops (radios and antennas provided by Neul), enabling considerably further coverage than could have been achieved with conventional Wi-Fi, in 2.4 GHz, for example. The tests showed that TV white spaces can help extend broadband access and offload mobile broadband data traffic. These hotspots can enable users to enjoy data-intensive services such as online video provided by BBC iPlayer and Sky Go during peak usage times, when additional capacity and wider reach is needed.

Rural connectivity. A base station was installed at TTP’s headquarters in Melbourn, a rural community south of Cambridge, and linked to a household in Orwell. The residents benefited from radical improvements in their broadband service, up to 8Mbps net speed achieved over nearly 3.5-mile links, within an 8-megahertz bandwidth, using a modified, prototype version of the Neul Weightless technology. TTP anticipates it would be possible to achieve speeds greater than 20 Mbps from its headquarters to Orwell using radios further optimized for rural broadband connectivity while occupying a single, dedicated TV white space channel.

Machine-to-machine. Industry forecasts estimate there will be more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020, with a good proportion of these communicating and sharing information wirelessly, enabling a wide range of applications. As such, the trial explored machine-to-machine communication, often referred to as the Internet of Things. Utilizing the available white spaces, an application developed by BT and Neul sent an alert message to the city council when city dustbins were full and needed emptying. TV white spaces are uniquely placed to unlock the potential promised for the Internet of Things.

Location-based services. Nokia and Spectrum Bridge developed a location-based service application that was deployed in the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, one of Europe’s leading aircraft museums. As museum visitors move around the collection, they can receive prompts on their smart mobile device informing them about the items they can see and offering a rich array of related content, including video clips.

Lab and field measurements. In addition to the implementation of trial networks, Arqiva, BBC Research and Development, CSR and CRFS spearheaded considerable laboratory and field measurements to better define the parameters needed to develop the regulatory framework required to enable the use of white space devices. The results of this work are being provided to the relevant U.K. and European regulatory bodies. In addition, the BBC developed the first version of a U.K.-wide database, which illustrates the typical availability that might be expected for TV white space devices following the completion of the U.K. digital television switchover.

View Mozilla-Thunderbird related news. Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. Our intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firebird (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser. In addition, by focusing solely on stand alone mail, we believe we can make some dents in the overall footprint and performance of the mail client by removing components and chrome we don't need. On top of that, the UI becomes much cleaner as a stand alone application as opposed to being part of the mozilla suite.

REDMOND, Wash. — April 24, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that entertainment partners, including ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, as well as CBS Interactive Properties, GameSpot, Last.fm, Manga Entertainment and MUZU.TV, are the latest to join the growing roster of advertising partners on Xbox LIVE. With the launch of the new Xbox 360 experience in December, advertisers are able to purchase standard 15- and 30-second spots across the Xbox LIVE Run of TV Apps. With nearly 40 million active members worldwide, Xbox LIVE allows advertisers to reach a socially engaged audience on the largest screen in the house.

“With the growth of Xbox LIVE, advertisers no longer have to choose between digital and TV advertising — we’re offering the impact of TV and the interactivity and addressability of digital in one platform,” said Ross Honey, general manager of Xbox LIVE Entertainment and Advertising at Microsoft. “As more and more industry leaders like ESPN work with us to help monetize their content on Xbox LIVE, TV media buyers win with the ability to extend their standard TV spots to this highly engaged consumer audience.”

Traditional TV viewing has become a multiscreen experience with smartphones, tablets and PCs. Brands are looking for deeper engagement with consumers, and Xbox LIVE is increasingly where they are spending their ad dollars. Since 2010, the advertising spending on Xbox LIVE has increased by 142 percent. Xbox LIVE Gold members in the U.S. spend an average of 84 hours a month on Xbox LIVE. Entertainment app usage has more than doubled year over year. For the first time on Xbox LIVE in the U.S., entertainment app usage has surpassed online multiplayer gaming.

“When we began offering ESPN content on Xbox LIVE in 2010, it was an entirely new way for fans to interact with ESPN. These new advertising opportunities will give clients a new way to interact with those fans,” said Eric Johnson, ESPN’s executive vice president of multimedia sales. “The Xbox LIVE platform offers a TV experience with the accountability and interactivity of the Web — all while reaching the right audience at the right time.”

In addition to giving advertising partners an opportunity to extend their advertising reach, Xbox LIVE offers ad partners a robust and scalable ad platform, offering standard ad products, as well as custom solutions. The Xbox LIVE Advertising global sales team consists of gaming and entertainment specialists who engage with top-tier agencies and advertisers in most major ad markets.

04.115.2012 - Microsoft Waives Windows Azure Bandwidth Fees for University Researchers to Advance Big Data Research in the Cloud

View Microsoft-Press related news.

REDMOND, Wash. — April 24, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. and Internet2 today announced a new agreement enabling member universities to take advantage of Windows Azure to open up additional collaborative, instructional and research opportunities in the cloud. The announcement was made at the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting today in Arlington, Va. The agreement is a significant step in making cloud computing more accessible and affordable for all researchers and instructors, and is a key step toward supporting the National Science Foundation’s Data Sharing Policy and Data Management Plan Requirements for the greater research community.

Under this agreement with Internet2, Microsoft will waive both data egress and data ingress charges for Internet2 university members through their institutions’ existing Enrollment for Education Solutions licensing agreement with Microsoft. Through this arrangement, principal investigators involved in large data initiatives, such as genomics, big data or “the long tail of science” projects, can save on bandwidth charges when moving or accessing data sets and shift those resources toward research-related activities and speed discovery.

“Microsoft recognizes the vital role research plays in spurring innovation and economic recovery in the U.S.,” said Sig Behrens, general manager for U.S. Education at Microsoft. “Moving petabytes of data in the cloud can be cost-prohibitive, so universities are not able to easily collaborate and share knowledge. With the elimination of data connectivity charges for Windows Azure, and the ability to leverage Internet2’s backbone, universities can save millions of dollars and achieve critical access to big data. This will not only break down silos, but also allow for more people to participate in the world’s largest cloud research community.”

“The research and education community has played a seminal role in the creation of the modern Internet and the applications that have made it one of the most transformative technologies of our lifetime,” said Internet2 CEO and President Dave Lambert. “Our work with Microsoft around the use of Windows Azure cloud services in support of large data management and research will allow the Internet2 community to work with Microsoft in new and innovative ways, and allow for greater collaborative, instructional and research opportunities in the cloud.”

Universities Sign Up to Pilot Research on Windows Azure

Microsoft is also working with Internet2 and the university research community to pilot new large-data management, archiving and curation efforts that demonstrate capabilities around research data management life cycles. Institutions such as Florida International University, George Mason University, University of California, Davis, University of California, San Diego, University of Michigan, University of Notre Dame, University of Utah, University of Virginia, and University of Washington, will be some of the first schools to pilot research projects in the cloud on Windows Azure.

“Data management and storage are things that our faculty spend too much time thinking about today. Faculty want to spend their energies addressing the science, collaborating with their peers and training the next generation of scientists,” said Kelli Trosvig, vice president and chief information officer, University of Washington. “UW faculty, using Windows Azure, have been able to introduce sophisticated data management and analysis techniques to undergraduates studying climate science and oceanography. This agreement will open the door to Windows Azure for applications studying the human genome and other areas of strength at the University of Washington.”

Research efforts will focus on four key project management areas, including the following:

• Genomics. This science area provides a key testing opportunity to show how the cloud can be used as a repository for data and tools to handle the vast output of the current generation of sequencers by creating living repositories for public data sets.

• “The long tail of science.” This includes working with research areas of science — such as sociology, geology, anthropology, transportation and oceanography — where a great need for a platform exists for analysis and collaboration, but around which researchers often work alone with little access to big infrastructure. This pilot project would provide easy tools and services that run on desktops or mobile devices but connect to the cloud where large data stores reside.

• High-performance computing. Another pilot project will examine opportunities to connect the computational tools of high-performance computing with large data repositories in the cloud.

As part of this agreement, Microsoft has committed to a grant of $50,000 (U.S.) in Windows Azure resources to Internet2 to help drive pilot projects. The award of the grant to individual members will be administered by Internet2. Interested Internet2 members can contact netplus@internet2.edu for details on how they might participate in the program. The arrangement will become available to Internet2 member institutions beginning in the third quarter of 2012.

Finally, as part of this agreement, Microsoft will investigate support for applications deployed on Windows Azure to authenticate users via Shibboleth. The Shibboleth architecture and implementation for identity management allows for cross-domain single sign-on, which facilitates collaborative research across institutions and simplifies maintenance of user names and passwords.
