Traditionally, persistence media has been a synonym for rotating disks — devices that are relatively naïve, providing basic read and write functionality with block-level atomicity. Rotating disks expose Logical Block Addresses (LBAs) that are statically mapped by the disk firmware to Physical Block Address (PBAs). The role of traditional disks has been limited to primarily providing power-safe durability, while the OS/hypervisor stack does the heavy lifting with regard to functionality for performance, crash consistency, redundancy, data services, recovery, etc. Flash technology has been a key disruption for traditional enterprise storage tiers — it exhibits two to three orders of magnitude improvement to latency and throughput. Besides the performance disruption of current NAND-based flash and future NVM incarnations (which is a topic for a future blog post), there is another important dimension with respect to the intelligence of these devices. Before I launch into some predictions for 2015, I want to take a quick look back at thepost I wrote a year ago , predicting how the network virtualization landscape would shape up in 2014. This is not just to pat myself on the back for getting a few things right (my predictions weren’t that bold in any case) but to see what the previous year can tell us about what’s coming next. For starters, I predicted that we’d see more adoption of NSX both numerically and in terms of a broader range of customers. The numerical data has been impressive: at the end of Q2, Pat Gelsinger announced over 150 paying customers for VMware NSX, and by the end of Q3, that number had grown to more than 250. Furthermore, the adoption has definitely spread into a wide range of industries and customer types, with enterprises as diverse as Best Buy, USDA and WestJet joining the service providers, Web 2.0 companies and financial companies who were early adopters. Having been a part of industry standards for over 20 years, I am able to see the changing landscape of Open Standards and Open Source in the new Mobile-Cloud era. The shifts in the role standards and open source are playing today are much different from what it was 20 years ago. They have been evolving to accelerate innovation and interoperability in this time of our ever increasing dependence on information technology. In 1994 (20 years ago) during the Client-Server era, AOL, Prodigy and CompuServe were providers delivering dialup services to consumers. These were mostly isolated repositories of information with very little interoperability. At that same time, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was established to standardize HTML and an HTTP working group was established in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). HTTP had been around since 1991, In the end it took both open standards and several open source projects to make the Web a reality, including the creation of HTTP and HTML standards as well as several open source projects for that created the HTTP servers and web browsers.
