10.27.2008 - Intel, Motorola, and Telefônica Test WiMAX in São Paulo, Brazil

View Intel-Press related news. Intel, Motorola and Telefônica have teamed up for a three-month pilot of WiMAX mobile broadband in São Paulo, Brazil, demonstrating continued global momentum and excitement for the next-generation wireless technology. WiMAX allows high-speed wireless broadband in places with difficult access points or in areas where the usage of wired or fiber optical networks is not possible. The pilot will be done in the Pinheiros and Jardims regions with 150 clients to help ensure the proper infrastructure is in place for commercial implementation in the near future. Using WiMAX 2.5GHz frequencies, the pilot delivers broadband Internet access with a speed of 2 Mbps for download and 600Kbps for upload. Telefônica intends to offer WiMAX services with competitive prices in relation to comparable wireless technologies and to complement to its broadband network, focusing mainly in Sao Paulo state's interior and other states. The company has also programmed tests in Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Porto Alegre.
