12.11.2012 - EnterpriseDB releases xDB 5.0 with Multi-Master Replication

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

Release Date: Dec 11, 2012 Multi-Master Replication provides PostgreSQL administrators broad new powers to expand access to data while controlling costs

BEDFORD, Mass. – December 11, 2012 – EnterpriseDB, the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products, Oracle database compatibility solutions and add-on tools for PostgreSQL, today announced the public release of Postgres Plus xDB Replication Server v5.0 with Multi-Master Replication (MMR). The new MMR capability eliminates a single point of failure, improving High Availability. It also enables database administrators (DBAs) to provide consistent and expanded access to near real-time data across geographically distributed systems. These benefits also help control costs compared to traditional database solutions.

With the estimated number of downloads of PostgreSQL topping 70,000 per week, a 40 percent increase over last year’s weekly average, enterprises worldwide are accelerating their adoption of Postgres and its components. This has fueled demand for enterprise-class add-on capabilities like Multi-Master Replication that give DBAs greater flexibility and broad new powers to leverage their open source deployments. Add-on tools help them customize their deployments to address individual needs for scalability, availability and performance.

“Multi-Master Replication capability is the kind of enterprise feature that has won recognition for Postgres among large, global brands,” Ed Boyajian, CEO and President of EnterpriseDB, said. “Our leadership position as the largest provider of Postgres solutions gives us a responsibility to deliver tools for EnterpriseDB customers and PostgreSQL users that help them meet the broad demands of the enterprise. Our MMR capability marks a significant advance in our mission.”

“PostgreSQL has achieved a meaningful presence in the market and global brands now consider it a viable alternative to traditional databases for a range of mission critical and non-mission critical applications,” Donald Feinberg, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst of Gartner, said. “Fortune 500 customers provide the underlying demand and support for add-on tools that enable DBAs to extract greater value from their databases and contribute to business objectives by expanding access to data and cutting licensing and hardware costs.”

Multi-Master Replication Benefits

Multi-Master Replication presents significant benefits for geographically distributed organizations. DBAs can designate a master for each locality for better write and read performance. Also, multiple masters throughout an organization – whether local or geographically dispersed – eliminates a single point of failure for e-commerce and other round the clock operations. If one master goes down, traffic can be routed to one of the other masters. This improves High Availability of their systems.

Also, for geographically dispersed systems that rely on one or more batch updates daily to bring everyone up to date from a central master, a continuously synchronizing multi-master system allows everyone to see all the data in near real time eliminating stale views of critical data.

Finally, with replication, DBAs can expand user access to the data and continue to utilize existing tools while also using commodity hardware. More technical details of the new capability include:

Improved write performance for multi-location updating and applications that are tolerant of eventual consistency Read scalability for read-mostly applications Enhanced write availability in single or multiple data centers Near real-time data synchronization across geographies. 12.06.2012 - PGDG apt repository for Debian/Ubuntu

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

We are pleased to announce the availability of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group apt repository of PostgreSQL packages for Debian and Ubuntu.

The repository itself is located at http://apt.postgresql.org/pub/repos/apt/, with instructions in the PostgreSQL wiki at https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Apt. The FAQ list is at https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Apt/FAQ.

The repository already includes the latest PostgreSQL versions released today.

People using the old "pgapt.debian.net" location of this repository should update their sources.list entries.

Project

We aim at building PostgreSQL server packages as well as extensions and modules packages on several Debian/Ubuntu releases for all PostgreSQL versions supported.

Currently, we support

  • Debian 6.0 (squeeze), 7.0 (wheezy), and unstable (sid)
  • Ubuntu 12.4 (precise), support for lucid is being worked on
  • PostgreSQL 8.3, 8.4, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2
  • Several server extensions such as Slony-I, various PL languages, and datatypes
  • Applications like pgadmin3, pgbouncer, and pgpool-II

Packages for older PostgreSQL versions and older Debian distributions will continue to stay in the repository; updates for those will be provided on an ad-hoc basis.

Quickstart

To use the repository, do the following:

Import the repository key from http://apt.postgresql.org/pub/repos/apt/ACCC4CF8.asc:

wget -O - http://apt.postgresql.org/pub/repos/apt/ACCC4CF8.asc | sudo apt-key add -

Edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pgdg.list. The distributions are called codename-pgdg. In the example, replace squeeze with the actual distribution you are using:

deb http://apt.postgresql.org/pub/repos/apt/ squeeze-pgdg main

Configure apt's package pinning to prefer the PGDG packages over the Debian ones in /etc/apt/preferences.d/pgdg.pref:

Package: *
Pin: release o=apt.postgresql.org
Pin-Priority: 500

Note: this will replace all your Debian/Ubuntu packages with available packages from the PGDG repository. If you do not want this, skip this step.

Update the package lists, and install the pgdg-keyring package to automatically get repository key updates:

apt-get update
apt-get install pgdg-keyring

More information: https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Apt

Repository Key

The repository key used has id ACCC4CF8 and fingerprint B97B 0AFC AA1A 47F0 44F2 44A0 7FCC 7D46 ACCC 4CF8. The key is signed by Christoph Berg's keys that are well connected in Debian's web of trust.

Acknowledgements

Work on setting up the archive was kindly supported by credativ, Redpill Linpro, 2ndQuadrant, and the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme. The build server is kindly hosted by DG-i. The archive is hosted on postgresql.org hardware.

12.06.2012 - PostgreSQL 9.2.2, 9.1.7, 9.0.11 and 8.4.15 released

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has released an update to all current versions of the PostgreSQL database system, including versions 9.2.2, 9.1.7, 9.0.11, 8.4.15, and 8.3.22. Users of PostgreSQL Hot Standby replication should update at the next possible opportunity. Other users should update at their next maintenance window.

This release fixes a significant page ordering issue with Hot Standby which could cause index corruption on the standby under some circumstances. In addition, this update patches timing issues with checkpoint and transaction ID wraparound which could cause data corruption in some cases. Today's update also fixes multiple issues with CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY and DROP INDEX CONCURRENTLY, which can cause those commands to fail or produce corrupt indexes. Users who use this feature may want to REINDEX or recreate affected indexes (see below).

This update release also contains fixes for many minor issues discovered and patched by the PostgreSQL community in the last month, including several fixes which are specific to version 9.2. These include:

  • Prevent psql crash due to incorrectly encoded input data
  • Fix pg_regress gmake build issues
  • Make sure correct directory is created for extensions
  • Fix some issues with buffer locks and VACUUM
  • Multiple fixes and improvements for pg_upgrade
  • Fix bugs with end-of-recovery when failing over to a standby
  • Avoid bogus "out-of-sequence timeline ID" errors in standby-mode
  • Don't launch new child processes during shutdown
  • Improve the ability of JOINs to use partial indexes
  • Fix assorted integer overflow errors
  • Eliminate memory leaks in record_out() and record_send()
  • Skip searching for subtransaction logs at COMMIT
  • Fix WaitLatch() timing issues
  • Fix handling of inherited check constraints in ALTER COLUMN TYPE
  • Make ALTER EXTENSION SET SCHEMA behave as documented
  • Have SEQUENCE SET statements in the "data" section of sectional dumps
  • Prevent parser from believing that VIEWs have system columns
  • Fix --clean mode for pg_dump
  • Prevent hash table corruption on out-of-memory
  • Various query planner and executor fixes and improvements
  • Multiple documentation updates
  • DST updates for seven timezones

PostgreSQL 8.3 will be End-Of-Life (EOL) in February 2013. As such, this update is likely to be the next-to-last update for that version. We urge users of version 8.3 to begin planning a full upgrade to a more current version of PostgreSQL now. For more information, see our Versioning Policy.

As with other minor releases, users are not required to dump and reload their database or use pg_upgrade in order to apply this update release; you may simply shut down PostgreSQL and update its binaries. Users who have skipped multiple update releases may need to perform additional, post-update steps; see the Release Notes for details.

Users who have used CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY extensively may want to REINDEX, or drop and re-create, indexes which were created using CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY after applying the update in order to be sure of their integrity. Unfortunately, indexes created concurrently are indistinguishable from indexes created non-concurrently, so users will need to rely on DBA knowledge. Once the update is applied, users can create the new index concurrently and then drop the old index concurrently to avoid downtime.

11.27.2012 - EnterpriseDB Enhances Remote Access to Postgres Management Console

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

Pivotal add-on tool for Postgres deepens visibility into deployments, provides new options for remote access and comes with year-end incentives

BEDFORD, Mass. – November 27, 2012 – EnterpriseDB, the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products, Oracle database compatibility solutions and add-on tools for PostgreSQL, today announced the release of Postgres Enterprise Manager 3.0. The new release allows database administrators (DBAs) to easily access and monitor their databases from an Internet-enabled device. It is part of an expanding suite of Postgres tools from EnterpriseDB aimed at supporting the growing numbers of companies adopting Postgres, including community PostgreSQL, and seeking ways to manage and optimize their deployments.

Postgres Enterprise Manager was embraced early on by DBAs responsible for large Postgres deployments, as the tool gave them access to database administration functions in a single console. Building on the successful launch of Postgres Enterprise Manager that has generated more than 5,800 installations, the newest version provides new levels of flexibility in monitoring, managing and tuning database performance and query speeds.

“Postgres users, both our customers and those using the open source community version, are calling for add-on tools that help them manage expanding deployments across mission and non-mission critical applications. Postgres Enterprise Manager plays a vital role in supporting the end user,” Ed Boyajian, CEO and President of EnterpriseDB, said. “Our family of Postgres add-on tools are making it possible for more enterprises to adopt Postgres by giving DBAs the kind of visibility and flexibility they need to manage large complex deployments and even smaller, single uses.”

In a nod to the growing legions of companies of all sizes that have turned to the open source community version of PostgreSQL, EnterpriseDB is offering a year-end incentive for the new version of the Postgres Enterprise Manager. The popularity of Postgres is rising significantly with estimated downloads of Postgres and associated components exceeding five million over the past year. Postgres Enterprise Manager 3.0 is also included in the new Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.2, also released today.

New Features for Postgres Enterprise Manager

Postgres Enterprise Manager 3.0 includes several new capabilities and feature enhancements, such as:

Web Client: A new web client provides DBAs with access to their monitoring dashboards and tools from many Internet-enabled devices. Using a web client means DBAs no longer have to download the local client component of the enterprise console onto multiple machines, saving time and giving DBAs the flexibility of anytime, anywhere access.

Log Manager: DBAs can do bulk configuration of logging parameters (log file locations, logging frequency, log message selection and log format) across all servers in the enterprise and view the information in a consolidated dashboard.

SSH Tunneling: With secure shell (SSH) tunneling, EnterpriseDB has eliminated many of the manual and troublesome tasks for accessing on-premise databases behind the firewall.

pgAdmin 1.16 Capabilities: Built on top of the open source pgAdmin, Postgres Enterprise Manager 3.0 incorporates key new features developed in the open source community, including support for PostgreSQL objects Range Types and Security Labels, as well as major new features such as the data Import Wizard.

11.27.2012 - Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.2 enhances performance and extends Oracle compatibility

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

BEDFORD, Mass. – November 27, 2012 – EnterpriseDB, the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products, Oracle database compatibility solutions and add-on tools for PostgreSQL, today announced the release of Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.2. The new version of EnterpriseDB’s flagship product offers an expanded Oracle-compatibility feature set along with scalability and performance enhancements that support larger, more complex enterprise deployments.

Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.2 is paired with the additional benefits of the new Postgres Enterprise Manager 3.0, also released today. The new version of the popular enterprise database management console includes a web client and a series of enhancements that make it possible for a single database administrator to manage many more databases than they could typically without such a tool. Both products are immediately available.

The latest version of EnterpriseDB’s leading database product aims for greater flexibility for the large enterprise. Some of the largest brands in the world in the insurance, telecommunications, government, finance, technology and other industries are deploying Postgres with the help of EnterpriseDB and hardened developments from the open source community. EnterpriseDB’s new version incorporates many of the enhancements to Postgres developed and released last summer by the open source community in PostgreSQL 9.2.

“We strive to keep pace with the evolving needs of our customers. The market for Postgres is growing fast and global enterprises, with complex environments and new demands, are increasingly turning to open source and asking more of our products to support their transition,” said Ed Boyajian, CEO and President of EnterpriseDB. “Continuing to enhance performance, scalability and agility while expanding our Oracle compatibility ensures we remain a long-time partner for our customers.”

"The PostgreSQL community is moving fast and furious. The performance improvements alone in the 9.2 release are staggering,” said Michael Gargano, development manager of eScholar LLC. “It's good to see that EnterpriseDB has been so quick to offer support and incorporate these new features into its flagship product. You can be sure that we'll be migrating to the 9.2 release as soon as possible."

Postgres Plus Advanced Server

The newest iteration of EnterpriseDB’s flagship product features the ninth generation of Oracle compatibility for the Postgres Plus Advanced Server. Easing migrations overall, the compatibility enhancements expand object type support, enabling developers to continue to realize value from their investments in Oracle skills and tools.

Performance upgrades in the new release include better vertical scalability on multi-core machines and faster read and write times. The newest release also significantly advances the performance and scalability of Postgres on hardware with up to 64 cores. Application development improvements open up new applications to solutions developed for PPAS, including support for range types and JSON data types.

Maintenance improvements ease a range of burdens on system administrators and DBAs while security advances, including SQL-conforming USAGE privilege on types and View Security Barriers, continue to make Postgres Plus Advanced Server the most secure among the open source databases.

Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.2 is available today on Linux 32 and 64 bit platforms, Windows 32 and 64 bit platforms, HP-UX on Itanium and Solaris. For more information, please visit http://www.enterprisedb.com/products-services-training/products/postgres-plus-advanced-server.

10.23.2012 - Are your SQL statements becoming expensive? Get a better view with pg_stat_plans!

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

2ndQuadrant is pleased to announce the release of pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat_plans 1.0 beta, an enhanced SQL monitoring and tuning open source tool.

The tool is a further improvement of the pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat_statements module that is distributed with Postgres 9.2, a release in which the module was heavily improved by 2ndQuadrant to make it usable by applications that do not use prepared statements.

pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat_plans allows you to view the most frequent and expensive SQL statements in your applications, just as many other tools allow. The tool is unique in its ability to offer an SQL query that can be EXPLAINed to view the actual plan, rather than merely a similar plan.

pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat[HTML_REMOVED]plans lists SQL statements by plan, not just by query, which allows it to diagnose even complex cases where a single SQL statement returns multiple plans when different parameters are utilised. pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat[HTML_REMOVED]plans is a variant of the standard Postgres contrib module pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat[HTML_REMOVED]statements.

With this release, the module works only with 9.2. In response to strong demand from 2ndQuadrant customers, an explicit goal of pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat_plans is to support Postgres 9.0 and 9.1.

Please visit the official pg_stat_plans page for more information and to download the beta: http://www.2ndQuadrant.com/en/pg[HTML_REMOVED]stat_plans

View PostgreSQL-Press related news.

Great news! We are excited to announce Aqua Data Studio 12.0, the latest version of our award-winning PostgreSQL database tool. We listened to your feedback and made it our mission to optimize your user experience in order to achieve massive speed gains for Big Data, plenty of GUI enhancements, and an overall more responsive application. We've even updated most of our underlying framework components to bring you better reliability and scalability. It's the best version of Aqua Data Studio ever.

What would a new release be without significant new features? Version 12 now includes FluidShell, an interactive shell combining the best of PostgreSQL command line + Unix shell, which will greatly assist you in automating all your database interactions.

Huge Performance Gains for Big Data

Lightning Fast

We've scoured our code to look for ways to improve Aqua Data Studio response times dramatically when dealing with very large data sets. You're going to love the results. We've sped up large script execution by 4x, query results by 10x, table data editor 380x and resultset compare by 850x. We've also made some core enhancements that make the app feel much snappier. Connection Pooling Manage and Scale Your Connections

Connection Pooling allows you to share connections across multiple query windows. Instead of creating a new connection for every query window, Aqua Data Studio will acquire a connection from the pool at the time of query execution and automatically allocate and de-allocate connections as necessary. Breaking the 65k Limit

When exporting to Excel, pivot grids are no longer limited to 65,000 rows. Plus, your customized chart color properties in Aqua Data Studio are now preserved in Excel. Learn more

The All-new FluidShell

Automate your database interactions

FluidShell is an interactive shell that combines the power of the SQL command line with the versatility of a Unix shell. Use the shell to connect to databases, execute queries, change history buffer and more. Then, take the output of your SQL statements and run them through powerful Unix functionality such as grep, pipelining, input/output re-direction and variable substitution to extract and transform your data any way you choose. Plus, we've exposed many of Aqua Data Studio's native UI features to FluidShell, so you can invoke import/export operations, schema compares, and more—directly from the command line. Learn more

More Powerful UI

A brand new visual editing style

Our new tab based schema viewer and editor eliminates the modal dialogs to make multitasking a breeze. Now you can view and edit several different schemas simultaneously across different databases. Learn more

A more feature rich editor

We've enhanced the usability of our editor by offering line wrapping, block selection copy and improved support for abbreviations. It's the best editor we've ever built. Learn more

Every setting at your fingertips

Aqua Data Studio offers hundreds of configurable options to customize the product to suit your needs. A new intelligent search box in the Options window now lets you quickly find any setting—instantly. Learn more
